Setting Up Piano Express At Home
Most piano progress happens between lessons, so setting up a successful home practice routine with Piano Express is essential. Here are three ways to use the app at home based on your equipment.
1. Digital Piano with a USB port.
The best method is using a digital piano with a USB "printer" port. Connect this directly to a laptop, Mac, or Chromebook to run the app seamlessly.
2. Digital Piano with MIDI ports.
Older digital pianos may have MIDI ports instead of USB. Use a MIDI-to-USB adapter cable, connecting the cable's "IN" plug to the keyboard's "OUT" port to send data to your computer.
3. Acoustic Piano
You can also use an acoustic piano by using the app as a play-along tool. While it won't track your scores, it provides vital practice experience. You can then pass your pieces officially when you return to class.
Routing Audio for a Private At-Home Experience
For private practice, the simplest solution is connecting your device's audio to your keyboard's "Aux In" port, allowing you to hear both through headphones. If your piano doesn't support this, a small two-channel audio mixer (approx. $30) can combine the signals for your headphones.
Mobile Devices
To connect mobile devices, you'll need an adapter (like a Lightning or USB-C to USB adapter). Consider a multi-port adapter that includes charging and an audio jack if you need both privacy and power.
